With many students starting university or college life for the first time, they will notice that there is another newbie on the block in many university towns and cities – the shared, rented e-scooter. Since last summer, the UK launched trials for rented e-scooting companies to offer their services and we are delighted to serve many student hangouts.
Why a trial? Because with a new mode of transport that reduces our reliance on cars and also takes pressure off public transport, it’s important to get it right and we need students to be shining beacons of sustainability and safety, to help us show the powers that be scooters are the way to go.
Here are ten reasons why and how you should check out Voi e-scooters
1. Micromobility is a new worldwide movement
As towns and cities address the climate crisis,, the micromobiity movement, which includes e-bicycles and e-scooters, is flying green flags from every possible post. One of the biggest growth areas in transport, you can be an early adopter and help your student city* embrace what is known worldwide now as a massive modal shift.
2. Regulation creates revolution
Sticking to the rules is not what students are famous for, but revolutions have been student-led for generations. Shaping cities for future generations is a
revolution that is definitely worth joining if you believe in clean, green and inclusive urban spaces. However, and here’s the lecture, respecting regulation is a vital part of this revolution. And at Voi, we are very pro-regulation and we ask you young leaders of society to do the same, so that the revolution can be enjoyed by all.
3. E-scooters are safe if you follow the rules
It takes quite a lot of work to persuade local authorities that shared e-scooters are safe, sustainable and pretty darn sassy. And if they see everyone breaking the rules, we have a steeper hill to climb to show off all the benefits. The biggies are to be sober, slow (ish), solo and street savvy. So, never use a scooter if you’re drinking or under the influence of anything dodgy; ; always ride solo; go slow in areas when your e-scooter tells you to slow down, and don’t even think about scooting on the pavements. It’s illegal, not clever and definitely not funny. We have all sorts of tech tricks to help you learn to ride safely. One example is a quick reaction test that you can take on your Voi app if you have had a drink. If you fail it, leave it.
4. Ride e-scooters with a student discount pass
If you are a new Voi e-scooter user, you can make some student savings with 50% off a Voi Daily Pass, by adding the code STUDENTSUK50 to your wallet before your first ride. This discount is for all students and staff at higher education institutions in places where Voi operates, as long as they are new Voiagers**. Read more about Voi’s student offers and how to best use the service to explore your university city here. We are also running a series of UK pop-up safety events around the country. If you go along, you’ll get a cool Voi helmet, which we highly recommend wearing. Check out our helmet selfie on our app too, where you can gain credits for enjoying safe scooting.
5. Follow the tech leaders
The world of shared e-scooter schemes is where the tech world is trending right now. As soon as you download the app, for example, you will see geofencing tech in action. Our tech controls everything from your parking to your speed, and we even make it compulsory for you to take a photo of your perfect parking on your phone and ping it through to us in order to end your ride. In short, always ping it, don’t sling it.
6. You are the Z-ustainability gen
University students are predominantly zoomers, and you are the young people who truly get sustainability. Many of you may even have taken part in School Strikes for Climate. However, this is one quick and easy way to take action, showing that you won’t enable ecocide. Our e-scooters, for example, are carbon neutral and our latest model lasts over five years, after which they are fully recycled. Their batteries are replaced in situ by our city rangers, and all transport of e-scooters is done in our electric vans or cargo bikes. The time has come to reduce pollution and congestion in our cities. So scoot over cars.
7. E-scooters are too cool for school
Your school days are over at last, and the good news is that shared e-scooters are also too cool for school. In fact, you have to be over 18 to use one by law and you need to have a driver’s licence (although you can use a provisional one). So, ID is not only your key to a student social life, it is also your key to the city. What’s not cool is riding your own e-scooter anywhere that isn’t private land. Many people don’t yet realise it, but yes, they are illegal on the streets.
8. Keep on top of this new busy life
Sometimes student life can be spread all over the place, and an e-scooter is your quick route from one social (or study) event to another. Just download the app and hop on board. But it’s important to pace yourself while you get used to it. That’s why we have created a Beginner’s Mode that reduces the e-scooter speed to 10mph so you can find your feet.
9. Speed up your new exercise regime
E-scooters are a great way to dash from class to crossfit, or seminars to the swimming pool. When brain fog kicks in with academic overload, and it’s a 20 mins walk to your favourite park run, circuit class or swimfit session, you may be tempted to just curl up under that new duvet. By jumping on a Voi, however, you are more likely to keep that sports date and then have more time for socialising afterwards as well.
10. Work for Voi
Voi has the highest number of e-scooters in the UK, and we are always keen to meet students with skills. Shift work as a mechanic, and Voi ambassadors or rangers to help us keep your uni streets clear of clutter, are perfect for students. Our merch is pretty cool too if you are on staff by the way. Check out our Jobs page for more information.
*Voi e-scooters are currently operating in the university cities of Liverpool, Birmingham, Northampton, Bristol, Bath, Cambridge, Oxford, Portsmouth and Southampton.
